'Rainbow' Nation

COLOUR

Colour me Fabulous!

The first Holi Colour Festival in Cape Town. Blast of colours showered excited and care-free expressionists.

What's a world without the colour express button? Dull, boring and plenty sad is what it is. Colour is our primary form of expression. Think about it... when your crush walks into the room, your cheeks colour from a rosey pink, if you're a trained professional, to outright crimson; the phrase, "Why so Blue?" and our Fashion favourites: Chanel - 'The Little Black Dress', Louboutins - Red soles... you get the picture.

Majority of the colour expressionists came dressed in white, almost like mobile canvases; each a unique experience, neither one looking the same. Splotches of orange, sprays of pink, paint strokes of blue... colour was all we knew that day.

I felt like we were in a more energetic re-make of RiRi's "We Found Love" music video.

Okay, to the point: Within seconds of meeting you, others will respond to the 'colour messages' flashed by your clothes. Different colours can make people feel a certain way. In fact, it has been proven by medical science that colour can influence the viewer's hormones, blood pressure and body temperature. To prove my point Street Snobz, just do this little exercise for us if the chance arises. Next time you’re on campus or in the streets of town just stare at a person wearing more then 1/3 of black on their body during a heat wave with no prayer of a cool breeze passing by. LOL. We dare you!

Head wraps were exploited that day. An accessory that made everyone look like hippies, which was befitting for this event, as well as a fashion forward piece of armour against the sun.

Sometimes it is not just a particular colour itself, but a combination of colours that create an effect on you and how others see you.  Colours produce different reactions when used in different fabrics and when put together in different colour combinations. A red jacket worn with a white shirt to a business meeting exudes confidence and power, but a red jacket worn with a lacy black top may be interpreted as, "I'm sexy and exciting and I have other things on my mind besides this business meeting".

Most important tip that we can strees to you is choose colours that are a good fit for your natural skin colour. There is no point choosing a colour that suggests creativity and confidence if it also makes you look washed out or dry.

Challenge for this week fellow Street Snobz:
Have a look in your wardrobe and see how many different colours you own. Do you have a veritable rainbow of outfits? Or are there just 1 or 2 colours that you wear variations of?You may find you are stuck in a colour rut. Knowing this, why not experiment with the colours you wear and surround yourself with. Let us know how it goes. The next post will be a more in depth exploration of the use of colour, how to use and abuse it with great examples. You never know… we may take a snapshot of you.
Send us feedback on the challenge for this week either in the comment box or by email: Snobzfeedback@gmail.com
